Getting our hands dirty

Today we talked about how the Vikings dressed, particularly looking at the colours they wore. We found out that the Vikings used colour to show how wealthy they were, so the brighter the colour, the richer the person.

We then used fruit and vegetables mixed with water to dye our own fabric. We found that it took a long time and was very messy work! While experimenting with different foods, we found that some fruits gave a much brighter colour than others. We used sponges and brushes to make patterns in the fabric.

Although the food we used came from our local shop, we found out that it wasn't so easy for the Vikings! They would have to find plants to dye with themselves or trade for more expensive materials. Now, we have much more technology and are able to produce clothing more quickly and in bigger quantities!
