Shakespeare Dream Team 2016

Published on Friday 6 November 2015 by Mrs Gentles.

We are starting our new Shakespeare project this year as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 'Dream Team 2016.' It promises to be our best project yet with ten schools from County Durham, Sunderland and Darlington taking part and the whole project is being led by Crook Primary School.

The name comes from the play we'll be performing next Easter, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' a favourite with Mrs Gentles as well as the children. We will be part of 'The Dream Team' - schools from all over England who'll be working on the play to commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death next year. He was only 52 when he died and he died on his birthday!

It starts with an exciting training day next week with members of The Royal Shakespeare Company, who will work with teachers from all the schools involved.

We hope it may even lead to some children travelling to Stratford upon Avon to perform in Shakespeare's birthplace.

Crook Primary has an excellent working relationship with The Royal Shakespeare Company which gets stronger every year, and due to this, they have asked us to take part in a pilot study and trial some new ideas. Our results will then be applied to hundreds of schools around the country, enabling the learning of Shakespeare to be an exciting and enjoyable experience for more and more children.

We'll also be working closely with our new theatre partner, The Theatre Royal, Newcastle, who'll be on hand to offer expert advice, workshops and theatre experiences.

It's going to be an exciting Shakespeare year so keep checking for updates.
