Mathematical times in Year 1

This week in Year 1 we have been looking at the multiplication and division unit in maths and exploring ways of making arrays. We know that arrays have rows and columns and so we used grids to help us keep the counters in the right formation. It was tricky without them! We know that we use arrays to help us count large amounts quickly and accurately. We have been practicing hard to count up in 2s, 5s, and 10s in preparation for Year 2. We love rote counting and are becoming so much more confident.

Later on in the week we started looking at sharing amounts equally and used counters and cubes to help us answer word problems. This allowed us to visually see how an amount can be accurately shared between groups. We knew that each group had to have the same amount to make it equal and fair. Some of us were even able to spot that sharing amounts was the opposite to multiplying numbers, and we could use our knowledge of the 2s, 5s, and 10s to help us share amounts equally without the use of counters.
