The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Published on Friday 21 May 2021 by Miss Dickinson.

This week we had a special delivery at Nursery and the children were so excited to see some caterpillars had been delivered into our groups for us to look after and watch them grow and turn into beautiful butterflies (we hope!). Every day, many of the children check on their caterpillars to make sure they are safe and to see if they have grown. After reading the story 'The Hungry Caterpillar' we also talked about the food the caterpillar ate and discussed whether the food was healthy food or unhealthy food and the children had to sort it into the correct categories.

We have also continued with our new sound this week which was p. The children had to recognise the sound, find the sound, write the sound and even find objects that begin with the p sound. We also did lots of activities where the children had to listen to which sound the adult was saying and place the hungry caterpillar on the correct sound.

Our number of the week this week is number 3. The children love to be number detectives finding the number 3 in and outside Nursery and also trying to collect 3 objects. These children amaze us each week with their love for learning!

Our little rays of sunshine this week are Amelia Pieczynska for independently creating a symmetrical pattern on a butterfly and also because she was able to use the phonic sounds we have learnt to sound out a word. Zara Godfrey for beginning to be willing to join in with some group time activities. She did a great job following instructions to feed the caterpillar. Luna Hall as she did fantastic sound work this week. She listened to the sound and was able to place the hungry caterpillar on the correct sound and she drew a fantastic p on the board. Louciena Coleman for really impressing with the butterfly she designed and she told us it was 'symmetrical' which means the same. She has also been a very sensible and kind girl. Finally, Archie Clarey as he has been so enthusiastic about the caterpillars. He checks on them every morning when he arrives at Nursery and at story time to make sure they are safe. He has been telling everyone about them 'getting bigger'. Well done to everyone, what superstars!
