So far this term we have been looking at concepts. Our resident Concept Cat's have been helping us as we have learnt about heavy and light as well as full and empty. Concepts are always great fun to learn about as the children are able to explore it all by themselves. They have been showing lots of diamond power over the past couple of weeks as they have been looking for their own interpretations of these concepts.
Phonics is now starting to get a little bit trickier. We have been learning some new digraphs (two letters that make one phoneme), along with LOTS of new tricky words. We just have a couple more digraphs to go and then we will be spending time reviewing what the children have learnt.
The children have now learnt the following phonemes:
s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss, j, v, w, x, y, z, qu, ch, sh, th. By the end of the week we will have also learnt ng and nk.
Last week we finished our journey around Africa and we began to have a little look at transport. Of course, we need transport to be able to help us travel anywhere! We identified planes, helicopters, boats, trains, buses, cars, bikes and even recognised walking and horses for transport. We then did some comparing of transport from now and the past. This was quite tricky as it's hard to imagine life before them but they were able to spot some similarities and differences.
This week we have been transported to a new country - China. We will be exploring China through Julia Donaldson's 'The Magic Paintbrush'. This book is full of wonderful vocabulary and it has opened up a magical world of possibilities. The children have used their own 'magic paintbrush' to draw something that they would like to see come to life.
