Lessons in Chemistry

In science this week, Year 5 have been investigating reversible and irreversible changes. Our favourite reversible change example was definitely the fact that melting chocolate can then be reversed by freezing! We then performed an experiment to investigate what would happen if we mixed bicarbonate of soda with white vinegar.

We were very excited to observe that as the bicarbonate of soda dissolved, it produced bubbles, making enough gas to inflate the balloons we had attached to our experiment bottles! We could then infer that this was an irreversible change as we could not get the original products back. I wonder how many of the children would like to recreate this experiment at home?
