RE Curriculum

Intent

At Crook Primary we are committed to ensuring that all children are provided with stimulus and questions that allow them to explore their own beliefs whilst acknowledging  and respecting that other people might hold different beliefs to them. We want them to have an understanding of the numerous religious traditions, beliefs and practices that are followed in our multi- cultural society and around the world. We want to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills such as critical thought, personal reflection  to answer challenging questions so that they can combat prejudice, make connections  and prepare them for adult life. We also want to give the children the time, space and skills to learn to reflect so that they can form their own beliefs and values as well as time to question. The curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils learn about a range of religious and non religious world views. We want to equip our children with the skills to develop a positive world view,  making sense of life and their own feelings. This in turn will help them” believe and achieve”.

Implementation

The Agreed  Durham Religious  Education Syllabus is the basis of our curriculum. RE will be taught in a block each term so that children can deepen their understanding. Within each block, children will undertake a form of enquiry which enables pupils to explore, investigate, evaluate, reflect and critically respond to key themes.Within RE pupils will progressively develop their understanding of the key themes of belief, authority, expression and impact of belief through structured enquiry questions related to each unit of work.  Enquiries will take the form of either a theological, phenomenological, philosophical, sociological or ethical enquiry. Each unit will have “sticky knowledge “ which will be shared with pupils in their books so that they can use them as a point of reference.  Books will be subject specific and will continue with children each year.

Impact

Through the study of RE children will increase their long term knowledge and form considered opinions about the world in which they live and to be able to respect the beliefs of others as well as their own.  They will also understand how religion plays an important part in shaping the identity of different cultures. They will be equipped with the skills to make moral decisions and to reflect on their decisions and views. They will gain and deploy skills which will allow them to critically thin and enquire in relation to the materials they study.

At the end of each year, children will be assessed against age related expectations associated with the learner behaviours of an expected pupil within RE
